Cockerell was an Architect Member of the Royal Academy and Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy Schools from 1839 to 1859. His special interest was the architecture of classical antiquity and his great knowledge of this subject stemmed from his travels in Asia Minor, Sicily and Greece. The Professor's Dream shows Cockerell's choice of the most important buildings of the ancient and modern worlds and was drawn as a comparison piece to his 'Tribute to Christopher Wren'.
